Anna Kustera : World's Smallest Art Fair

These are some further updates for THE WORLD'S SMALLEST ART FAIR exhibition which has ended at Anna Kustera. Roberta Smith from the NY Times reviewed the show in the August 1st, 2008 issue of the New York Times:

"THE WORLD'S SMALLEST ART FAIR Probably bound for the record books, this enterprising variant on the standard summer group show includes 28 galleries from the United States and Europe. It is taking place in a large front window, where each participating gallery is represented by a single small work of art; all the pieces are installed in neat rows, as if along aisles, and a floor plan is available.

As with any art fair, there are unknown artists and galleries to learn about, and a modest media program selected by the artist Alix Pearlstein can be viewed inside the gallery, which is outfitted like a normal-size V.I.P. lounge.

Anna Kustera Gallery, 520 West 21st Street, Chelsea, (212) 989-0082, annakustera.com; closes on Friday. (Smith)"

Also another review of the art fair appears on an online blog athttp://www.achys.com/ and the person has this to say about it:

"The smallest fair in the world takes place in New York showcase gallery Anna Kustera. Despite the modest size, the number of participating galleries is catching up-Art-Moscow. 'The smallest fair in the world', organized by Anna Kustera Gallery, along with the artist Maurizio Kattelano - in fact, it's a fair vice versa. The main actor, gallery, here becomes the organizer and fairs, and venue. The smallest - is not form the point of view of the number of participants, and about the size: the exhibition space is used as a Anna Kustera galleries showcase the total size of which is 7 x 7 meters. The Anna Kustera Gallery, located in the heart of Chelsea and it's a rare participant of modern art.

The last major speech at the New York Armory Show Fair was held in 2002. But gallery owner Anna Kustera trying hard to turn her space into something more, than an ordinary white cube: sometimes, organizing sparkling disco ball, sometimes- inviting well known guests to sing in karaoke. In the list of the gallery artists you did not find celebrities, but the young American talents and extravagant characters' are always presented here.

For example, at the last exhibition were presented photographs from the collection of Eric Kroll. Kroll is renowned photographer, well known by his speaking album titled Fetish Girls. In addition to the Kroll's work with names like 'Bettina on my face', the collection presents hit shots of foot-fetishist Elmer Batters and photographing classic photos Vidzhi caught turned out the large amateur of erotica. This summer, a modest New York gallery has decided not closed for holidays, and introduced itself as a Contemporary Art Fair.

As surprisingly, participate in it will be not only neighbors but also galleries from different cities of the world. Thus, the program declared by participants from Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Holland and even China. And the geography of American galleries is rather impressive: Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco, Curator's Office from Washington, Kavi Gupta from Chicago, Fredric Snitzer Gallery of Miami. The most famous New York participants - Envoy gallery with young artists and Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, which among other things, you can find the Yves Klein works.

Simple statistics show that of thirty-nine galleries participating are foreigners. How Anne Kustera able to gather such an international composition, remains a mystery. Obviously, enormous desert for this belongs to Maurizio Kattelane, whose name can be the best advertising. Each gallery at the fair represents one work no more a square meter. The total price of one square meter showcases is $ 100. Considering the number of participants and the modest size of exhibition space, the exposition will be changed almost daily.

So, for the month of the fairs can be gathered an impressive collection. The London gallery Artprojx Space will bring prints of the artist David Bleydi for just '65. The New York Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects will show video of the artist from Berlin Julia Oshatts - for $ 3.5 thousand. Pekin Fine Arts from Beijing show painted porcelain skull of Huang Yan for $ 4.5 thousand. A Hamburg White Trash Contemporary will expose in Anna Kustery Gallery abstraction of Ben Hyubsh worth $ 1.8 thousand. Gallery director Nils Grossien confessed that one of the main reasons for participating in the fair - the time and venue. Indeed, to show itself to Chelsea during the summer holidays may be unexpectedly profitable deal. Inside the gallery located so-called 'information center', whose design was commissioned by the art-provocateurs Ju$t Another Rich Kid (www.justanotherrichkid.com).

Moreover, within the walls of the gallery will work VIP-lounge, which will show the video, selected to participate known video artist Alex Perlshteyn."
